MIDDLE DAYS...

Hello, Friends up there in Pohjola !
Time has passed very quickly here, so I haven`t been writing to you at all, this far ! But these weeks here have been sooo interesting. At work it`s been pleasant to talk with the residents at nursing home. There are many ,many nice ladies and gentlemen, who want to tell about their lives, children and grandchildren. For example, there is this elderly man - let`s call him Mario- who was married to a British woman. He had had been working as a clark for 34 years. At some time they got divorced, unfortunately. But he seems to be very kind and polite, and smiling man. In general, I`ve noticed that the residents are very polite , smiling and grateful people. I have got good response from them - it is nice that they say it loud.
What was remarkable to me from the beginning of our practise, was that at nursing home there were that many relatives, family members, during the whole day  taking care of their own ones. Some come already for lunch to feed their mother or father, and they also bring food, for ex. biscuits and fruits for them. The practises are that the relatives wash the clothes, except linen and towels, though the residents use their own washing towels. Residents go to have a shower every morning, and if he or she is not able to go to bathroom, carers help him/her to get washed in bed with washing towel and the water in basin.
Though these old people seem to be kept as in a container from day to day, like in Finland, too, it seems that they are quite happy because of their families. Their dearest ones come many times in a week, and even grandchildren, nieces and nephews come to visit their grandma, grandaunt or uncle. The visits are not only 15 min or half an hour long, but they really spent time together- take care, talk, eat, watch TV, etc. Some time they call us carers to sit with them on the bed of their grandma and serve sandwiches or cake to us. There we sit together , talking Maltese and English. They also are interested about me, where I come from and about my family. It seems like these Maltese people are so warm and family centered. Most of them don`t forget their elder members alone at nursing homes.
I was informed that if a family wants to take the resident outside from nursing home, for example to have a walk on the street by a wheelchair, they need to sign a paper , that they are responsible of ,if there happens some accident during the walk. So, they are not very willing to take the residents out. I think thats not a very good practise.
Well, fortunately we have time to do other things as well than work. My mother an two aunts were staying in Malta for one week, so I was living with them. That was so nice. At mornings I had the breakfast at the hotel and it was only half an hour walk to work from there. One morning I almost had to swim to work, because there was a thunderstorm and lots of raining all day long. The streets moved to rivers very quickly. Valley Road, where our workplace is , was that day River Road !
We have been enjoying the sun at seaside and visiting many places, for excample me and mum &aunts went to Cozo island for one day trip - very nice countryside with all those little villages and churches there !
Thanks if you were reading my text this far - it became like a novel, sorry !!
I send you all the best wishes from Malta !
